On the grounds in Arizona…

attending 5 collector car auctions. Prices are tending to be quite strong this year. Last year total sales in January was $157 million. The prediction for 2012 is $180 to $200 million.

A side note, with 1,300 vehicles on the auction block, this is the largest Barrett-Jackson auction in 10 years. The action continues until Sunday the 22nd. We’ve picked-up some great Corvettes & are bringing them back to Napoleon. Keep us bookmarked. We’ll keep you updated. More soon….

on October 8th, 2011 at the Mecum Dallas, Texas inaugural auction. This L88 T-Top was pretty much an unrestored car that received a 3-category Bloomington Survivor and also had an additional short list of show awards. Chandelier Auction Bidding…

is normally phantom bidding, designed to make people think there’s a competitor when there isn’t one. Per Amy Cappellazzo of Christie’s, “Chandelier bidding is, which is the auctioneer is allowed to bid on behalf of the seller up to the reserve price. So the point of an auction is that sort of canter, lively chatter, and get a little momentum going. So the auctioneer is allowed to bid on behalf of the seller and take bids, whether they exist or not, until they get close to the reserved price. That’s part of the dance of the auction, part of the momentum, and part of the theatre that goes into it.”

So… when most thought it took two bidders I have always known that it only takes one bidder and a good auctioneer that knows how to read the trees, plants, tent poles, chairs, and of course, the chandeliers. This is a legal auction practice which is normally disclosed in your bidders agreement for auction of items with reserves. Your comments and/or questions are anticipated. A report released by the BBB (Better Business Bureau) categorized nearly a half million complaints into 70 different categories over a 12 month period. The niche market vacuum cleaner service received the fewest complaints (1,244) where as much maligned remodeling contractors were all alone at the top with 33,125 reports. Auto Repair (7,664), Finance Companies (5,921), Attorneys (4,628), accountants (3,909), financial planners (3,771), and bankers (3,246) all appear in the top half of the list. Used car dealers rank below local charities in the complaint department, albeit just one spot, sitting in the 42nd (2,638) position. We would like to think it was a testament to hard work in an industry that often finds itself in no win situations. We would like to think this downward trend will put us in the neighborhood of the chimney sweep (1,442) twelve months from now but only time will tell. the act of blending components together thoroughly has given the Corvette hobby some of the nicest fake wanna-bees that I have ever inspected and a loss of confidence in security of value. Legitimate cars with legitimate components and legitimate option combinations are very hard to find and quite desirable. Legitimate cars are the benchmark for value and investment. Do your due diligence prior to buying your next rare Corvette or you may be joining the Gala Homogenization Party…by default!!! It’s big…it’s bad…it’s ugly!!! Terry- I’m one of those people in the background of the hobby (Been to your store many times since 1994, talked to you at the shows, been to seminars you’ve held with Al on restamps, etc).   You have always been a benchmark and a leader in the hobby and have admired you from a far.

Thanks so much for once again taking the lead on discussing the big elephant in the room!  I personally am a NCRS judge (Miami valley Chapter; thanks for your support over the years) and am amazed on the fraud out there.  Business & people have been sniffed out and dealt with and Pro-Team is still standing to prove your integrity.

Thanks for your life long dedication to the hobby that started w/ building a Corvette Graveyard that turned into a collector car dealership.  Thank you for staying focused in the Corvette Hobby while others have shifted to Muscle Cars and exotics.

Terry – I’m sure I am not telling you anything you don’t already know or haven’t heard already.

Validity is of great concern to me and I’m sure anyone buying a car like this.  I don’t mind paying for something that is worth the money, but you obviously have to sure you are getting what is advertised. The horror stories definitely scare me. People looking to make something what it really isn’t.

If that car was a fake it is a real shame.  Our hobby is being ruined by the few to the detriment of the many. It hurts you as a business owner and me as the buyer because it makes all of us suspicious.  You are only as trustworthy as your reputation I guess. Thanks for the info. – J.Cruz, July 28th, 2011
