Liars, Fakers, and Half-Truth Tellers…

Friday, January 13th, 2012

consists of a list of Corvettes by VIN number that are not what they appear to be. This list continues to grow as we visit auctions and large Corvette shows. Many were either Red or Black Corvettes that probably started out life in less desirable colors as they had repro trim tags. Our Fakers list now has over 450 entries and is not shared with the public. I hope your recent Corvette purchase is not on the list! Authenticate before you bid or buy!! Nominate Someone for the Great Hall…

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

I have again been asked to serve on the Bloomington Gold Great Hall Selection Committee so if you know of someone (including yourself) that you believe deserves to be inducted into the Bloomington Gold Great Hall, please send your nomination to terry@proteamcorvette.com. However, the standards criteria are quite high.

To qualify, a selection committee* will review all nominations and evaluate the strength of their contribution to the Corvette community, how much they influenced the direction of the Corvette hobby, or how historically important their accomplishment(s) have been. If you can answer these three questions easily, then your nomination may have a good chance of qualifying as one of only 50 people to be inducted during the five year program.
1. Specifically, what did this person do to contribute to the greater good of the Corvette community? What did they give?
2. Specifically, how did this person influence the direction of the Corvette community?
3. Specifically, what accomplishments did this person make that were or are historically important?

Anyone nominated with supporting documentation why they should be inducted will be considerably more likely to increase their odds of being inducted. Remember, it’s not a popularity contest. It’s about who really had an impact on the Corvette hobby, industry, or community.

The Great Hall has already inducted 20 individuals over the past two years. There are 3 years remaining in the program and therefore 30 open induction slots. Send your nominations (and reasons why) today.

Next month you can nominate specific Corvettes for the Great Hall.

*Selection Committee: Bill Lock, Terry Michaelis, Mike Yager, Bill Mock, Jim Prather, Gary Mortimer, Roger Judski

Chandelier Auction Bidding…

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

is normally phantom bidding, designed to make people think there’s a competitor when there isn’t one. Per Amy Cappellazzo of Christie’s, “Chandelier bidding is, which is the auctioneer is allowed to bid on behalf of the seller up to the reserve price. So the point of an auction is that sort of canter, lively chatter, and get a little momentum going. So the auctioneer is allowed to bid on behalf of the seller and take bids, whether they exist or not, until they get close to the reserved price. That’s part of the dance of the auction, part of the momentum, and part of the theatre that goes into it.”

So… when most thought it took two bidders I have always known that it only takes one bidder and a good auctioneer that knows how to read the trees, plants, tent poles, chairs, and of course, the chandeliers. This is a legal auction practice which is normally disclosed in your bidders agreement for auction of items with reserves. Your comments and/or questions are anticipated. See & Hear More of the 1969 BFG #49 ZL1

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

1969 BFG #49 ZL-1 Corvette Race Car… one of 3 team cars sponsored by BF Goodrich during ’71-’73 showcasing their new line of T/A Radials. #49 competed in the trifecta of sports car racing; 12 Hrs of Sebring, 24 Hrs of Daytona, and 24 Hrs of LeMans. The 3 team cars #48, #49, & #50 were owned & campaigned by John Greenwood (inducted into the Sebring Raceway Hall of Fame in ’02). Driven by top road course drivers of the period; Greendyke, Greenwood, Johnson, Smothers, Yenko. 1st major win was 1st place in GT in ’72 at Watkins Glen 6 Hr driven by Greenwood and Smothers. In ’73 it was campaigned at 12 hr of Sebring, Daytona 24 hr and at 24 hr of LeMans. At LeMans, it set the GT speed record of 215mph on the Mulsanne Straight. Was delivered as a 69 factory L88 & was used by John Greenwood as a PR car. When the #50 car was heavily damaged in a crash in ’72, he converted the #49 to a race car, installing all of the famous Greenwood innovations, notched rear end, quick replacement radiator, quick camber adjustment, and a new Chevy ZL1 all aluminum 427 cu engine producing over 750 hp @ 6500 rpm. Restored to concourse condition in ’08 by Kevin Mackay of Corvette Repair & debuted at Quail Motorsports ’08 where it received Best in Class over a strong field of Sebring Race Cars.

Job one…

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

promoting legitimacy as a benchmark for value and investment must be a focused path out of the mess that has been created. – TLM

Comparison Shopping…

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

is not easy as not all Corvettes were created equal and not all Corvettes are restored equally… What is important to you?
A) just price?
B) VIN tag and attachments?
C) body/trim tag?
D) engine stamp pad?
E) body repairs?
F) documentation?
G) Bloomington/NCRS awards?
H) transmission?
I) rear end?
J) color combination?
Legitimate cars with legitimate components and legitimate documentation are becoming harder to find. Did you know that there is a database of Corvette VIN numbers (over 400) that are not legitimate and most information came from inspections of these cars at collector car auctions or judged events?

How does one compare the value of a black 1967 with a blue 1967 when GM made so few black Corvettes in 1967? Did you know that option combinations make certain legitimate Corvettes very hard to find and desirable?

Who does your due diligence and pre-purchase inspections? Are they qualified? Do they know the difference between real and memorex? How do you compare one Corvette on eBay or an auction TV show (if you’re not there) with another? Comments, email: terry@proteamcorvette.com

The Next Decade…

Monday, February 14th, 2011

will be an interesting episode in the Corvette hobby and especially for those of us who have made their income exclusively from that hobby for almost 40 years but before we look forward lets look back at the last decade of which I prefer to forget and put way behind me… why? Well, lets look at some of the last decade’s highlights and headlines:
a) tech boom/bust
b) 9-11-09
c) War in Afghanistan
d) War in Iraq
e) residual effect of NAFTA
f) many relatives passed
g) Ponzi schemes
h) Wall Street musical chairs
i) real estate run-up and bust
j) 2008 gas pump price reality meet speculation
k) Fannie/Freddie collapse/Bailout
l) AIG Collapse/Bailout
m) TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) Funds
n) CPP (Capital Purchase Program)
o) Stimulus Packages
p) Cap and Trade Green Energy Tax
q) Clash for Clunkers
r) Impending Global Warming Disaster?
s) Washington’s continued aid and abetting of business greed and corruption
… do I need say more?
My list of events probably has effected the lives of every American in some form or fashion and as we look forward to the challenges and rewards of the next decade, I can only speculate that successful entrepreneurs, business owners, and Joe Q Public will be less inclined to reward themselves with second homes, planes, Corvettes, and other luxury items unless, of course, it is kept from view of their neighbors, employees, and newly born government agencies that will be there as a luxury oversight entity. NO QUITE DONE YET! HELP!! I am sure that the above will guarantee much comment of which can be emailed to: terry@proteamcorvette.com

Buy… Sell… Trade… or Dream… Just about every Corvette owner I know, including me, started out as a dreamer and probably with magazines like Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Road & Track, Super Chevy among others, when we were still in school. Remember Miss Hurst and Linda Vaughn?… and 99% of us could not afford a Corvette until later in our lives. We worked hard and with success, we became buyers. Life sometimes got in the way and we became sellers. In a decade that will have historians and novelists wondering how the hell we made it through in one piece, we became survivors. Now, after taking a collected breath and a well deserved break from the doom and gloom, isn’t it time we become dreamers again? Remember, I’ve got your dream right here. ProTeamCorvette.com
